Glossary
An Architectural vision.
My name is Christian, and I am a student at Montmorency College. Right now, I am studying Social Science, but I am planning to change programs by next year. The program I want to change to is Architectural Technology. This glossary is made for everybody that want to discover a little bit more about Architecture and understand a few of the terms used that are very helpful. All the terms and definitions were found on the internet. To be an Architect you need to go to the university but if you want to finish earlier you can study in Architectural Technology in college. There is also one last option, and it is to do a DEP in architecture, which takes the least amount of time to finish between the other choice.
- Arcade
- Noun
- An arcade is a series of arches supported by columns or piers It can be attached to a wall or to nothing.
- Example: This old town is surrounded by old houses with arcades.
- fr: arcade

- scale ruler
- Noun
- A scale ruler is a tool for measuring lengths and transferring measurements at a fixed ratio of length. There is multiple type of scales on the same ruler for a different type of measurement.
- Example: Architects normally use a scale ruler with different scales marked on each edge.
- fr: règle d'échelle

- Backup Wall
- Noun
- Common interiors walls are cold-formed steel framed walls with water-resistant sheathing and concrete masonry.
- Example: Inside a back-up wall you have air barrier, vapor barrier, moisture control and insulation
- fr: mur de soutien

- Brick courses
- Noun
- It is a layer of the same product running horizontally in a wall. It can also be defined as a continuous row of any masonry unit such as bricks, concrete masonry units, stone, shingles, tiles, etc
- Example: Brick courses on the first working day need to reach a maximum height of 1.30 m, which is equivalent to 12 or 13 courses.
- fr: cours de briques

- Cellular concrete
- Noun
- Also known as lightweight cellular concrete, low-density cellular concrete is a cement-based suspension with a minimum of 20% foam entrained in the mortar.
- Example: Lightweight cellular concrete is the ideal lightweight solution design needs and offers a low cost and a good value advantage for lightweight infill construction.
- fr: béton cellulaire

- Concrete block
- Noun
- A concrete block is a prefabricated block made with fine concrete or cement mortar, used in the construction of walls.
- Example: The concrete blocks is made with 3 buckets of stone, 2 of sand, 1 bucket of cement and water.
- fr: bloc de béton

- Dovetail Insert
- Noun
- Dovetail insert clamping design prevents the insert from being lifted by shearing forces during demanding operations.
- fr: Insertion en queue d'aronde

- Exposed concrete
- Noun
- Exposed concrete refers to concrete whose surface is a visible part of the architectural and interior design of the building.
- Example: The house is finished with exposed concrete.
- fr: béton apparent

- Gravity load
- Noun
- Gravity loads are body loads available only in Structure. These loads simulate the force of gravity as it affects the model.
- Example: When a beam bends it is due to gravity loading.
- fr: Charge de gravité

- Green concrete
- Noun
- Green concrete is defined as a concrete which uses waste material as at least one of its components, or its production process does not lead to environmental destruction, or it has high performance and life cycle sustainability.
- Example: Some architects, builders and engineers are turning to environmentally responsible green concrete construction with new concrete formulations that help conserve non-renewable resources and reduce the CO2 emissions problem.
- fr: béton vert

- Insulating concrete
- Noun
- A reinforced concrete form works, system generally made with rigid thermal insulation that remains in place as a permanent interior and exterior substrate for walls, floors, and ceilings.
- Example: Insulating concrete has been used to bridge decks, abutments and girders, and multiple other things.
- fr: Béton isolant

- Masonry ties
- Noun
- The tie in a hollow wall is a component that is used to join the internal and external walls.
- Example: Using masonry ties will help keeping the wall in place.
- fr: Liens de maçonnerie

- Metal channel
- Noun
- Metal channels are light gauge and cold formed. Light gauge means thin. Cold formed means that they are made by bending thin steel without heating.
- Example: Due to its high resistance, the metal channel can be used on the floor or in places with heavy traffic of people.
- fr: Canal en métal

- Metal grating
- Noun
- Metal grating consists of 2.5m wide prefabricated grating panels, with 4 mm horizontal wires, 6 mm vertical wire with 3 three-dimensional decorative profiles along the horizontal one.
- Example: Metal grating can be used as floors to let water pass.
- fr: Caillebotis métallique

- Metal rod
- Noun
- Metal rods are low carbon steel bars.
- Example: Metal rods are used to build multiple types of buildings.
- fr: tiges métalliques
- Porous concrete
- Noun
- Porous concrete is a special type of concrete with high porosity used for concrete finning applications that allows water from precipitation and other sources to pass through directly, thereby reducing runoff from a site and allowing groundwater recharge.
- Example: Used in gardens and for sidewalks.
- fr: Béton poreux

- Reinforced concrete
- Noun
- It consists of the combination of two materials, concrete and reinforcing steel.
- Example: Reinforced concrete can be used as beams, columns, walls, foundations or slabs.
- fr: Béton renforcé

- Relief Angle
- Noun
- It's an angle between the part of the flanks of a cutting tool below the cutting edge and a plane perpendicular to the base.
- Example: The relief Angle is part of the design of the window frame.
- fr: Angle de dégagement

- Steel framing
- Noun
- Steel framing is a general term. It could be structural or non-structural shapes.
- Example: Steel framing is based on a frame or skeleton of any structure whose components are mostly steel columns and beams.
- fr: Ossature en acier
